England tour of Sri Lanka is in danger of being cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world according to I Newspaper.
If England were to cancel their 2-test series in Sri Lanka which is set to start next Thursday, they'll be following the example of F1, who today cancelled the Australian GP this weekend, as well as the NBA who have cancelled games ongoing, the ATP who have cancelled several big tournaments and several football leagues around the world.
Although Sri Lanka only have two confirmed cases of coronavirus so far, the county is taking measures to ensure the spread is halted, which includes restrictions on foreign nationals entering the country.
A decision on the Sri Lanka tour is expected to be announced within the next 48 years. With many England fans expected to travel to Sri Lanka next week, a decision will need to be made sooner rather than later.
England are currently playing their 2nd warm-up in preparation for the tournament and with the team already being in Sri Lanka, there is a chance that a decision will be made to play the game behind closed doors.
The ECB recently released their own action-plan to prevent the spread of the virus on the tour. This included confiramtion that England players and management would not sign autographs or interact closely with the crowd. However, with the virus spreading at an alarming rate, a further decision with more extreme measures may need to be taken.
If England were to cancel the test series, it seems likely that the traditional kick-off for the county season with Essex facing an assorted MCC team will also be called off, as it's due to be held in Sri Lanka towards the end of March.
As of publishing this article. No decision has been made. Obviously the public health needs to take priority, however this fan is hoping that the decision is made to just play it behind closed doors. If we're all going to be self-isolating, we'll need something to watch on TV.
